Already have a contractor? Check their license

Every builder comes with a record.

Five checks from the Contractors State License Board, on every profile and rechecked every month. Here's how to read them.

  • License

Active and free of disciplinary action. A suspended or revoked license is the clearest warning sign there is.

  • Classification

A B, General Building license is what California requires to build a new home, including an ADU.

  • Licensed since

How long the business has held its license. The longest-licensed builders are listed first.

  • Contractor bond

A bond on file with the state gives you a claim if the contractor breaks the law or walks off the job.

  • Workers' comp

Coverage for the crew. Exempt means no employees on record, so ask who will actually be on site.
